Project Onion is undertaken in collaboration with Watershed Organisation Trust (WOTR). We are working with farmers in a bid to transform agriculture from a mere traditional occupation to profession, to make everyone believe farming is a profitable business and indeed Agriculture is Desh ka Culture.

2015-16

FY 2015-16:

  • Project was piloted in Badgaon, a village in Gaya
  • Conducted 1st training program on 17-18 October 2015 at Badgaon on onion farming by experts from Nashik
  • 15 farmers agreed to grow onion seeds in over 20 acres land
  • Successful germination rate was more than 95% whereas avg. germination rate is ~75%
  • 2nd training was conducted between 22-24th Dec 2015 at Badgaon on transplanting and monitoring of onion crops till harvesting
  • 3rd training was provided on methods of harvesting for onion bulbs
  • More than 50 farmers from 5 districts (Gaya, Jehanabad, Aurangabad, Arwal and Samastipur) of Bihar participated in this training programme
  • Temporary employment of more than 800 days created in this very project over a period of 45 days
  • 4th training on Onion Storage and Post-Harvest Technology happened from 11-13th March 2016
  • Sent updates and information related to onion crops in Hindi via group SMS services to farmers ( 1000+ SMSes)
  • Yield upto 100 qtl/acre received
  • Production of more than 75 tonnes of onion, quality on par with Nasik variety
  • Increased income of farmers by at least 4 times

  • Model spread across 25+ villages in 4 districts of Bihar
  • Intercropping technique being employed to reduce crop failure risk. 75 Farmers growing onion along with magrella ajwain, coriander, methi etc. to have recurring income from farms
